NCAA Finals MVP Anthony Semerad a great fit for Gilas Pilipinas: coach

San Beda's Anthony Semerad, the Most Valuable Player of the NCAA Season 90 Finals, will be a great fit for the Gilas Pilipinas national team, says his coach with the Red Lions, Boyet Fernandez.

Semerad torched the Arellano Chiefs for a career-high 30 points built on 4 three-pointers in Game 2 of the NCAA Season 90 Finals, and was named Finals MVP after the Red Lions won their fifth consecutive crown.
The incoming GlobalPort rookie also helped shackle Arellano's John Pinto, and garnered praise from Fernandez as a solid two-way player.

"You cannot question Anthony. He's been there all year long, he's been one of my top defenders, and he's transformed from an offensive player into a defensive player as well," said Fernandez. "Credit to this guy for his work ethic."

Semerad showed a deft touch from beyond the arc and from the free throw line, and Fernandez believes skills will be of great use to the national basketball team should they extend an invitation to him.

"Well, Gilas needs him," Fernandez said. "He's a defender, and he can shoot from the outside."

"I think, if given the opportunity to play for Gilas, and he's qualified for Gilas, I think it's (good)," he added.

Fernandez is also hopeful that Semerad – along with brother Dave and San Beda big man Kyle Pascual – will go on to have a long and fruitful career in the PBA.

"Now that he (Anthony) will be playing for GlobalPort, he will be an asset to the team. I wish that Anthony stays long in the PBA, as well as David and Kyle. I do thank them for staying and playing in their final year (in San Beda)," said Fernandez.

For his part, Semerad said he will continue to work hard on both ends of the floor.

"Keep working on defense, offense. It doesn't stop now. I have to continue working hard every single game," he said.

While obviously delighted to be a champion once again, Semerad admitted that he feels a little sad to be leaving his teammates.

"But I feel that it's time to take the next step," Semerad added.

"He deserves to be in the PBA," Fernandez said of his player.
