Alaska overcomes San Miguel despite Fajardo's 43-point explosion (FULL GAME REPLAY VIDEO)

Alaska Milk foiled San Miguel's attempt to claim an automatic semifinals berth with a pulsating 103-97 win in the PBA Philippine Cup on Wednesday.

Despite June Mar Fajardo exploding with 43 points and hauling 20 boards, the Aces carved out a victory through the efforts of Vic Manuel, Calvin Abueva, Jayvee Casio, and Cyrus Baguio in the end game.

Alaska was trailing 93-94 when Manuel converted a Casio assist into a dunk with 1:11 to go. The Aces then took advantage of Arwind Santos’ miscues to stretch the gap to six points.

Sonny Thoss led Alaska’s balanced attack with 18 points while Abueva and Chris Banchero had 17 markers each.

Manuel and Baguio added 12 and 10 respectively for the Aces’ eighth victory in 10 games. Alaska is now tied with Rain or Shine at second place and remained in contention for an automatic qualification to the tournament semis.

The Beermen, meanwhile, remain on top with a 9-2 win-loss mark.

“We knew it’s going to be tough. There’s a zero feeling of comfort even when you’re up by 10. You’ve got comfort only when it’s over,” said Alaska coach Alex Compton in the PBA website following the win.

Aces ruined Fajardo’s 43-point effort, which is the first since Asi Taulava scored 49 points to go with his 21 rebounds for Talk ‘N Text in 2003.

It was a highly competitive match that saw the ejection of Ryan Arana who was called for a flagrant foul on Abueva.
