June Mar Fajardo making sure he is ready for Greg Slaughter

PETRON big man June Mar Fajardo hasn't faced top pick rival Greg Slaughter in a league game since they battled each other inside the court in Cebu four years ago.

Fajardo, however, is making sure he'll be ready the next time they meet.

The 6-foot-10 sophomore center admitted he has no firm grasp on how big Slaughter has improved since they squared off in the 2009 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Finals between University of Cebu and University of Visayas.

"Surreal." That was how Greg Slaughter felt after he was taken by the crowd favorites Barangay Ginebra Kings with the number one pick of the 2013 PBA Rookie Draft last Sunday.

The seven-footer was joined by his new teammates – including All-Star guards LA Tenorio and Mark Caguioa – at the stage while thousands of fans at the Robinsons Place Manila chanted “Gi-Ne-Bra!”

“Surreal, that’s all I can say right now,” said Slaughter. “I couldn’t ask for anything better.”

2013 PBA Rookie Draft Complete Results

As expected, 7-foot center Greg Slaughter was selected first overall by Barangay Ginebra San Miguel. Picking second, San Mig Coffee took former San Sebastian big man Ian Sangalang. Rain or Shine rounded out the top three by grabbing another center, Letran beanpole Raymond Almazan.
Barangay Ginebra acquired the fourth pick from Barako Bull and selected Arellano University’s James Forrester. UAAP MVP Terrence Romeo was picked fifth overall by GlobalPort, which received the pick that Barako Bull traded to Petron Blaze before it was moved again. GlobalPort also acquired Barako Bull’s sixth pick, which they used to select Romeo’s FEU teammate RR Garcia, and used their own seventh pick to take 6-foot-7 big man Isaac Holstein.

Greg Slaughter: "I just hope to end up with Barangay Ginebra"

Potential top rookie pick Greg Slaughter is not pressured at all if and when he joins Barangay Ginebra as the year’s no. 1 overall selection in this year’s PBA Draft.

He said suiting up in a Ginebra uniform will allow him to help the league’s most popular ballclub win a league title after a five-year drought given the mixture of veterans and young players in the team.

Ginebra to pick Ian Sangalang over Greg Slaughter on PBA Draft

IF Barangay Ginebra hits the jackpot and gets the top pick overall in the 2013 PBA rookie draft, team coaches and officials are 'almost unanimous' in choosing Ian Sangalang over seven-footer Greg Slaughter.

That is, unless Bobby Parks changes the Gin Kings' plans.

A team insider said Ginebra coaches and officials, except for one or two exceptions, prefer to draft the versatile and mobile Sangalang if the team gets to dip its hands into the draft pool ahead of everybody else.

June Mar Fajardo, Greg Slaughter not yet ready for FIBA-Asia, says Rajko Toroman

PETRON rookie June Mar Fajardo and Ateneo center Greg Slaughter, two celebrated big men owing to their size and skill, are not yet ripe for big international events like the Fiba-Asia men’s championships, according to former national coach Rajko Toroman.

While insisting he was not trying to put down Smart Gilas 2.0 coach Chot Reyes’ efforts to beef up the national squad for next year’s Fiba Asia men’s in Beirut, Toroman said he believes Fajardo and Slaughter have a long way to go before they can hold their own against against Asia’s best big men.
