PBA: Richie Ticzon named GlobalPort interim coach replaces Baculi

The GlobalPort Batang Pier have embarked on a youth movement in the offseason, and that has extended to the team’s coaching staff.

The squad on Saturday confirmed its appointment of Richie Ticzon to call the shots for the team, replacing Junel Baculi.

“Management of GlobalPort has decided today to name Richie Ticzon as interim head coach,” team owner Mikee Romero said at the Hoops Center in Mandaluyong after the team’s practice game against the Alaska Aces. GlobalPort won the game 102-92.

San Mig Coffee's Marc Pingris named PBA Finals MVP

Marc  Pingris was named Most Valuable Player of the PLDT Telpad Governors’ Cup finals after lifting his team to victory in Game Seven.
The San Mig Coffee defensive demon posted monster numbers of 19 points, 17 rebounds, and five blocks in the series clincher as the Mixers completed their unfinished business after losing in the title series last season.

San Mig Coffee drubbed Petron Blaze in the winner-take-all Game 7, 87-77, to clinch the PBA Governors’ Cup in front of more than 21,000 spectators at the Araneta Coliseum on Friday night.

After engaging the Boosters in three tight quarters, the Mixers unleashed a searing 9-2 run in the final three minutes to break away and secure the title.

Marc Pingris outplayed Petron’s bigman Junemar Fajardo and finished Game 7 with 19 points and 17 rebounds to go with his 5 blocks.

PBA Finals Game 7 today; Petron vs San Mig Coffee

The 2013 season of the PBA is down to an ultimate match for all the marbles. Petron Blaze and San Mig Coffee dispute the Governors’ Cup in Game Seven on Friday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum, with each team looking to complete unfinished business.

The Boosters, who forced a deciding match after winning Game Six last Wednesday, are trying to get back the crown they won in the 2011 edition. That was the last finals appearance as well as the last title for the league’s oldest and winningest franchise.

Petron survives in PBA Finals Game 6 vs San Mig (REPLAY VIDEO)

The Petron Blaze Boosters survived a late scare and beat the San Miguel Coffee Mixers, 99-88, Wednesday night at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

With the win, the Blaze Boosters tied the series at 3-3 and forced a decisive Game 7.

Import Elijah Millsap led Petron again, finishing the game with 30 points and 6 assists, while rookie June Mar Fajardo maintained a consistent finals performance with 21 points and 14 rebounds.

Calvin Abueva greeted by boos while receiving Rookie award

EVEN in his shining moment, Calvin 'The Beast' Abueva heard the boss.

Alaska's controversial freshman forward won Rookie of the Year honors on Friday night but was greeted by boos from the pro-Petron gallery during the PBA Annual Leo Awards at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The boos, however, were understandable since the league's individual awards were held before Game Four of the Governors Cup Finals between San Mig and Petron.

Calvin Abueva bested June Mar Fajardo for Rookie of the Year award

Alaska forward Calvin Abueva won Rookie of the Year honors in the PBA’s Leo Awards on Friday, beating out a late challenge from Petron Blaze center June Mar Fajardo.

The brash Alaska rookie, the second overall pick in last year’s draft, made an immediate impact with the Aces despite joining the team late to finish his stint with San Sebastian in the NCAA. Abueva sparked the Aces to a surprise run to the semifinals of the Philippine Cup.

He was instrumental for Alaska as the Aces marched to the finals of the Commissioner’s Cup, where they swept Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in three games to win their first title in the post-Tim Cone era.

Arwind Santos is finally no longer a bridesmaid. The ultra-athletic Petron Blaze forward was named Most Valuable Player of the 2013 PBA season on Friday at the Leo Awards at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Santos beat out Jayson Castro of Talk ‘N Text and LA Tenorio of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel for the plum.

San Mig Coffee beats Petron in PBA Finals Game 4 (REPLAY VIDEO)

The San Mig Coffee Mixers squandered a 28-point first half lead before waking up in the fourth quarter to notch a Game Four victory, 88-86, over the Petron Blaze Boosters on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Mark Barroca broke the game’s final deadlock with free throws with 21.9 seconds left to rescue the Mixers, who tied their PLDT Telpad Governors’ Cup finals series at 2-2.

They had to go through the eye of the needle against a Boosters team that never quit despite a hot start by San Mig Coffee, which took a 33-13 lead after the first quarter.

Calvin Abueva's claim to ROY-MVP Award is impossible now

ALASKA coach Luigi Trillo said whatever happens in Friday’s PBA Annual Leo Awards, he’s happy and proud of what energetic rookie Calvin Abueva has brought to the Aces this season.

Abueva is the favorite to win the Rookie of the Year honor in a season where his spectacular play in the first two conferences has inspired talk of a rare rookie-MVP year for the former San Sebastian star.

LA Tenorio, Jayson Castro, Arwind Santos fighting for MVP trophy

The race for the 2013 PBA Most Valuable Player is down to three men with Talk ‘N Text guard Jayson Castro, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel sentinel LA Tenorio, and Petron Blaze forward Arwind Santos disputing the award.

The winner of the league’s highest honor will be known on Friday in the Leo Awards set at 7 p.m. at the Mall of Asia Arena, before Game Four of the PLDT Telpad Governors’ Cup finals series between Petron and San Mig Coffee.

Petron shames San Mig Coffee in PBA Finals Game 3 (REPLAY VIDEO)

The Petron Blaze Boosters bucked the absence of starting point guard Alex Cabagnot to cruise to a surprisingly easy 90-68 victory over San Mig Coffee in Game Three of the PLDT Telpad Governors’ Cup finals on Wednesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Import Elijah Millsap started at point guard for the Boosters in place of Cabagnot, leading the Boosters with 28 points and eight rebounds to take a 2-1 series lead.

“It’s something we tinkered with in the offseason,” said Petron coach Gee Abanilla of his decision to move Millsap to the one-spot with the absence of Cabagnot, who is out with an injured foot. “Medyo maganda naman ang kinalabasan.”

RR Garcia to join 2013 PBA Rookie Draft; resigns from Gilas team

The coming PBA rookie draft just got more interesting. This after former Far Eastern University star and UAAP Most Valuable Player RR Garcia decided to forego his last year with the Gilas cadet pool to join a draft pool where he is expected to be the top guard prospect.

Garcia said he has already secured a release from Gilas head coach Chot Reyes as well as the permission of his D-League team NLEX through manager Ronald Dulatre.

Accompanied by FEU coach Nash Racela, Garcia asked for his release which Reyes did not hesitate to grant.

Barangay Ginebra interested to acquire Beau Belga

Barangay Ginebra governor Robert Non bared their interest to acquire big man Beau Belga.

The 6-5, 225 pound wingman is now at the center of Rain or Shine’s negotiations as his contract is expiring at the end of the month.

Non told Solar Sports Desk that they are not directly talking to Belga, but has already sent feelers to Rain or Shine.

“Nagpadala kami ng feelers sa kanila. Just to express our interest kay Beau,” said Non.

Bobby Ray Parks out of 2013 PBA Draft due to ineligibility

AFTER weeks of speculation, National University star Bobby Ray Parks has made it known he is not joining next month’s PBA rookie draft.

Charlie Dy, Parks’ representative, said on Monday the decision was made easier for the Bulldogs star since he failed to satisfy the PBA draft requirements for rookie applicants, prompting the two-time UAAP Most Valuable Player to consider other options.

“Ray-ray is turning 21 only on February 19, then ga-graduate siya March next year pa so hindi pa siya eligible for the PBA draft,” told Dy

San Mig Coffee wins Game 2 of PBA Finals vs Petron (REPLAY VIDEO)

The San Mig Coffee Mixers tied the PLDT Telpad Governors’ Cup finals with a 100-93 victory, but not before fending off a late charge from a spirited Petron squad at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum on Sunday.

Marqus Blakely led San Mig Coffee with 23 points, while James Yap added 17 for the Mixers, who saw a double-digit lead whittled down to just three points in the dying seconds.

Petron’s Arwind Santos was named the Best Player of the 2013 PBA Governors Cup, beating out two of his teammates for the award given out Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena prior to Game 2 of the Finals.
Santos edged teammates June Mar Fajardo and Alex Cabagnot, Ginebra playmaker LA Tenorio and GlobalPort forward Jay Washington for the award.

Petron beats San Mig Coffee in PBA Finals Game 1 (REPLAY VIDEO)

The Petron Blaze Boosters used a furious fourth quarter charge to take a 100-84 victory over the San Mig Coffee Mixers in Game One of the Governors’ Cup finals on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

After scoring just 59 points in the first three quarters, the Boosters poured down 41 huge points in the final period to book the win in their first match in the championship round since winning the tournament in 2011.

“I just thought we played a great fourth quarter,” said Petron coach Gee Abanilla, who was victorious in his first finals game as a PBA head coach. “I’m surprised also. We just got into a rhythm.”

Barangay Ginebra to pick first in 2013 PBA Rookie Draft

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel will pick first overall in the 2013 PBA draft after the Air 21 Express won the draft lottery on Friday.

The Express had a two-thirds chance of winning the top pick after finishing with the worst record this season, while GlobalPort had a one-third chance with the second-worst record.

The Gin Kings acquired the Express’ draft pick prior to the season in a multi-team trade that saw John Wilson and KG Canaleta transfer to Air 21.
