Gilas Philippines moves up in FIBA rankings: 3rd in Asia, 28th in the world

The Philippines continued to move up in the FIBA's world basketball rankings after the silver medal finish of Gilas Pilipinas in the FIBA Asia Championship.

From 31st, the Philippines improved three spots to 28th place in the world rankings. The country also improved its standing in Asia, trailing just China (14th) and Iran (17th) and surging ahead of Jordan (29th) and South Korea (30th).

China and Iran have combined to win the last nine Asian championships dating back to 1999.

The Philippine national men’s basketball team cruised past Kuwait, 110-64, to have a strong finish to its group stage campaign in the in the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship Friday at CSWC Dayun in Changsha, China.

Terrence Romeo had his best game of the tournament so far, scoring 19 points. Jayson Castro also continued his fine showing for Gilas Pilipinas with 16 points.

After suffering a shocking defeat in the opening game of the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship, the Philippine national basketball team went on beast mode.

Gilas Pilipinas took out its frustration on an overmatched Hong Kong squad, 101-50, on Thursday in Changsha, China to ease some of the pain of its loss to Palestine.

The Philippines didn't give the East Asian side a chance, leading from bell to bell. Gilas scored the first 12 points of the game and never looked back.

Philippines express desire to host 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has told FIBA that it plans to join the bid to host the 2019 FIBA World Cup of Basketball.

Businessman and SBP president Manny Pangilinan said he met with FIBA secretary general Patrick Baumann during the FIBA World Congress in Seville last Friday.

Batang Gilas falls short to Argentina in FIBA U-17 Worlds (FULL GAME REPLAY VIDEO)

The Philippine national youth basketball team looked impressive in mounting a late challenge but ultimately fell short against Argentina, 84-71, in the classification round of the FIBA Under-17 World Championship in Dubai, UAE.
The Batang Gilas team dropped a fifth straight assignment but gave a glimpse of some of their finest play so far after connecting on seven three-pointers in the fourth quarter to give their South Americans foes a late scare.

Philippine Youth team sweeps SEABA Under-18; book ticket to FIBA Asia Under-18

The Philippine national youth basketball team showed no mercy in dismantling Singapore, 124-63, to sweep the 2014 Southeast Asian Under-18 basketball championship on Wednesday in Sabah, Malaysia.
The win capped the dominant run for the Filipino youngsters, who made quick work of Indonesia (98-35) and Malaysia (93-76) in their previous games.

Philippines sets new Guinness world record in basketball marathon (VIDEO)

It’s only proper that this basketball-crazy nation now owns the wacky record for the longest non-stop basketball ever played in the world.
Intrepid participants in the 2014 Philippine Basketball Marathon achieved the feat for the country after playing continuous basketball from 9 a.m. Monday to around the same time yesterday morning at the Meralco Gym.

With their unbending spirit and resolve, the Phl cage marathoners logged a little over 120 hours of play, surpassing the time of 112 hours and 13 seconds the Missouri Athletic Club set in its own wacky game in St. Louis, Missouri on March 21 to 25, 2012.

Filipino skater Michael Martinez makes history at 2014 Sochi Olympics

Filipino skater Michael Martinez delivered a graceful, yet strong performance in the medal event of the men's figure skating in the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia on Friday.

Martinez, who made Olympic history for the Philippines and Southeast Asia by competing in Sochi, garnered a score of 119.44 in the free program.

He has a total score of 184.25 points after the short and free programs, which allowed him to take an early lead.

However, Martinez dropped out of the medal race after performances by the US' Jeremy Abbott (1st), Belarus' Jorik Hendrickx (2nd), Uzbekistan's Misha Ge (3rd) and France’s Florent Amodio (4th).

Filipino figure skater Michael Christian Martinez made history on Thursday night after competing in the short program in the men’s event in the 2014 Sochi Winter Games.

Martinez, a 17-year-old prodigy from Muntinlupa City, was hailed by the television commentators as “a really entertaining skater” prior to his routine. They also noted his pioneering status as the first Filipino to compete in the figure skating event in the Olympics. “History is being made,” according to the announcers.

He was fifth in the start list, coming after Liam Firus of Canada, Yakov Godorozha of the Ukraine, Misha Ge of Uzbekistan, and Jorik Hendrickx of Belgium.

Lone Philippine bet in Sochi Winter Olympics draws attention from US Media

Figure skater Michael Christian Martinez is the lone representative of the Philippines in the Winter Olympics, but the 17-year-old from Muntinlupa has managed to grab a piece of the spotlight.

Martinez marched with the Philippine flag during the event’s opening rites early Saturday morning and did not go unnoticed during the international broadcast. The commentators called Martinez “a highly-talented figure skater” during the coverage of the lavish ceremonies.

He was also the subject of a profile by Nicholas McCarvel of NBCOlympics, the website of the event’s American broadcast partner.
