Following its successful campaign in the world championship qualifier, Gilas Pilipinas chose to beg off from competing in the 24th Fiba-Asia Champions Cup set in Amman, Jordan next week.

Pacquiao in Olympics? AIBA pushes for pro boxers in Olympic Games
In April 1989, the International Basketball Federation (better known for its acronym Fiba) lifted its prohibition on professional basketball players, paving the way for the entry of superstars from the National Basketball Association (NBA) in the Olympics. When the popularity of basketball in the quadrennial meet hit the roof, other sports have followed suit.

Don't look now, but the head honchos of the International Amateur Boxing Association (Aiba) are seriously moving for the inclusion of pro boxers in the Olympics, and they are talking as early as the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. The way Aiba officials envision it, the mere thought of the likes of Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. strutting their fistic stuff in the Olympics is enough to instantly elevate the sport's status in the Olympics.

NY Knicks guard JR Smith banned for 5-games for drug violation
New York Knicks guard J.R. Smith has been suspended five games without pay by the NBA, the league announced Friday, for violating the league anti-drug program.

The ban will begin with the first game of the 2013-2014 season in which Smith is physically able to perform, which is an issue in his case because the 27-year-old American underwent left knee surgery in July.
