Barangay Ginebra San Miguel’s move toward a run-and-gun system has produced more than just excitement for its legion of fans.
The Gin Kings have also won their first two assignments, giving them the early top spot in the Philippine Cup.
“I feel very comfortable with this system,” Ginebra superstar Mark Caguioa told InterAKTV in an exclusive interview. “Like I said before, with LA (Tenorio) and the new system we’re using, basketball has become so easy for me.”
Tenorio, who spent the past four and a half seasons with an Alaska team which preferred to play at a deliberate pace, said he didn’t have trouble adjusting to a faster style.
“Hindi ako nahirapan, lalo na nung sumali ako sa SMART-Gilas kasi tumatakbo rin kami roon,” said Tenorio. “Madaling tumakbo lalo na kung kasama mo tumatakbo rin.”
Tenorio believes the running game is best suited for the squad.
“We don’t have a big man, so definitely mas OK yung running game for us. We just have to get the rebounds and make some stops para makatakbo kami.”
Even youngsters like second-year player Allein Maliksi and rookie Keith Jensen are thrilled about the change of pace.
“Mas gusto ko yun personally, kasi mas madali intindihin at hindi ka na masyadong i-si-set up. All we have to do is run and finish the break,” said Maliksi.
Jensen echoed those sentiments.
“The running game is the kind of game which looks perfect for our team. We have a lot of athletic players like Chris (Ellis), Allein, Mark and others, so it’s ideal that we run and score for the fastbreak at every given opportunity.”
