Nonito Donaire is ready to rumble. So is Toshiaki Nishioka.
Donaire and Nishioka face off Saturday night (Sunday noon in the Philippines) at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California with the mythical title of world’s best 122-pounder more important that the Filipino-American’s World Boxing Organization crown.
Donaire weighed in at 121.6 lbs during the official weighin at the Manhattan Beach Marriot, while Nishioka came in at 121.8 lbs.
“Ready to go,” said Donaire, who is aching to post a stoppage win against Nishioka as he has been unable to stop his last three opponents.
Nishioka, who will be fighting for only the sixth time outside Japan, has also vowed to put on a show of force.
Promoter Bob Arum said there will be a great number of Japanese supporters on hand, a testament to Nishioka’s immense popularity.
Donaire will enter the ring armed with a 29-1-0 win-loss-draw card with 18 knockouts, while Nishioka will parade a 39-4-3 ledger with 24 knockouts.
Since nearly taking Fernando Montiel’s head off in February 2011, Donaire has failed to score an abbreviated win as he was held to 12 full rounds by Omar Narvaez of Argentina, Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. of Puerto Rico and Jeffrey Mathebula of South Africa.
Donaire, 29, hopes that a knockout win against the skillful and veteran Nishioka will change the view being shared by hardcore fight fans.
Nishioka, 36, has beaten several Filipino customers, the last being Balweg Bangoyan, whom the Japanese stopped in five rounds in a defense of his WBC title in 2010 at the Nihon Budokan Hall in Tokyo.
