San Miguel Corporation re-evalutes participation in the PBA after Balkman's Lifetime Ban

San Miguel Corporation (SMC) is re-evaluating its participation in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) in the wake of the "choking incident" involving Petron Blaze import Renaldo Balkman.

According to a report on Spin.ph, SMC accepted the lifetime ban imposed on Balkman after his meltdown against the Alaska Aces last Friday that ended with him choking teammate Arwind Santos.

But the company also said it believes "the incident has been blown out of proportion, and has damaged our good name."

Spin.ph quoted an SMC statement that said: "As such, given the possible long-term effect of this incident to the San Miguel organization’s image, and in consideration of our need to preserve our good reputation, management has decided to re-evaluate the company participation in the PBA."

SMC said it does not condone Balkman's actions and apologized to the PBA and its fans for their imports unsportsmanlike conduct.

Currently, the San Miguel group controls three teams in the PBA: Petron Blaze Boosters, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings, and the defending Commissioner’s Cup champions San Mig Coffee Mixers.

On Monday, PBA Commissioner Chito Salud announced that Balkman has been banned from the PBA for life and fined P250,000 for his actions against game officials, coaches and teammates.
