Calvin Abueva representing the Philippines in international competition thru Smart Gilas Pilipinas national team?
The idea isn’t seem too far-fetched, at least for the brain trust of the national squad. Members of the Philippine national men’s basketball coaching staff are interested in the brash Alaska rookie to possibly become part of the pool, InterAKTV has learned.
SMART-Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes refused to make an official comment on the matter.
A high-ranking member of the staff said that they have been looking at Abueva as a member of the Gilas pool for a while now.
“Actually, nung simula pa lang,” said the source, who refused to be named.
In his first season out of San Sebastian, Abueva has emerged as the top candidate for the season’s Most Valuable Player after finishing runner-up in the Best Player of the Conference twice while helping Alaska win the Commissioner’s Cup.
Despite the interest in him, the star forward was not picked because PBA teams had only committed one player each to Gilas.
“Tig-iisa lang, so si Sonny Thoss na lang.”
Thoss, Alaska’s starting center, had been part of the Gilas pool from the start.
But with the PBA taking a long break to give way to the national team’s preparations, it seems that the team is once again exploring the possibility of adding Abueva to the pool.
Another member of the staff said that Abueva’s athleticism and ability to get into the heads of opponents could serve the national team well.
“Maiinis yung mga kalaban diyan.”
