After grabbing a historic high in the world football ladder, the Philippine Football team ,Philippine Azkals, dropped one spot in the latest FIFA World Rankings released on Thursday.
The Azkals moved to 144th from the country’s all-time high ranking at 143rd last month to tie Kazakhstan in the ladder. The Philippines, however, still remained as the third best team in Southeast Asia behind Vietnam (132nd) and Thailand (142nd).
The drop in the rankings could be attributed to the lack of matches the Azkals have played in the past month. They last saw action in the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup qualifiers last March, where they beat Cambodia and Turkmenistan on their way to booking a ticket to the tournament proper in Maldives next year.
The Azkals will play their next match on June 4 against Hong Kong.
Meanwhile, Japan remained as the best team in Asia, followed by South Korea, Australia, Iran and Uzbekistan to complete the top five.
Spain also stayed at the top of the world rankings, followed by Germany, Argentina, Croatia and Portugal.
World governing football body FIFA calculates every country’s ranking based on match results (a win, a loss or a draw), its importance (i.e. a friendly or a World Cup match), and the strength of the nation’s opponent ranking-wise. These points are then accumulated from the country’s past results in the previous four years.
