Following a 78-70 win over heated rival De La Salle in the FilOil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup, Ateneo has pulled out of the tournament due to an injury plagued lineup.
The Blue Eagles, reigning UAAP mens’ basketball champions, will also withdraw from the Fr. Martin Preseason Cup.
Against La Salle on Saturday, Ateneo was already down to 9 players.
Ateneo team manager Paolo Trillo said that some of the Eagles who figured in the 78-70 win over the Archers were also playing hurt.
“We want to respectfully appeal that we pull out at this point,” Trillo said in Reuben Terrado’s Spin.ph report.
“It’s no secret that the team is hurting right now and it’s also no secret that we are planning to do that."
Among the Eagles in the injury list are JP Erram, Von Pessumal, Gieboy Babilonia, Kris Porter and Gwynne Capacio.
With the pull out, the Eagles will be relinquishing the top spot in Group B. They will be going out with a 7-1 win-loss record.
According to tournament media officer, Rick Olivarez, University of the East will be the Group B leader, followed by La Salle, University of Sto. Tomas, then Letran.
