MVP invites Heat coach Erik Spoelstra to watch Gilas Pilipinas

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manuel V. Pangilinan has extended an invitation for Erik Spoelstra, the Filipino-American coach of the Miami Heat, to return to the country to watch the national team’s training for the FIBA Asia Championship.

The SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national squad is currently in the midst of a build up for the top Asian cage competition set on August 1 to 11.

“Boss MVP sent Coach Spo a congratulatory message and at the same time inviting him to come to the country to observe the training of Gilas Pilipinas and help us in our preparations in terms of, say, give the boys pep talk,” national coach Chot Reyes told Eddie Alinea of the government-run Philippine News Agency.

Spoelstra’s mother Elisa Celino is a native of San Pablo City, Laguna, and he has spent the past several summers visiting the Philippines to conduct basketball clinics.

Last year, Spoelstra attended a practice session of Gilas but ruled out any further involvement.

“I’m a fan of the program but I wouldn’t be able to commit any time to it,” he told InterAKTV in an interview last August.

“I think anything more than me supporting the program as a distant fan, anything more than that, would probably be unrealistic.”

With the Heat winning its second straight title, the Gilas brain trust hopes the coach reconsiders, especially with Pangilinan doing the prodding.
