Iran, China tallest teams in FIBA Asia Championship; Gilas in 7th

Is height truly might? China and Iran, tabbed by observers as the top contenders for the title in the FIBA Asia Championship, boast of the tallest lineups in the tournament when it comes to listed heights.

Iran, China tallest in FIBA Asia Championship

According to a post on the tournament’s official website, the defending champion Chinese team, bannered by three 7-footers including former NBA forward Yi Jianlian, boast of an average height of 201.92cm, or about 6 feet, 7 1/2 inches.

Iran, the two-time Asian champions led by behemoth NBA center Hamed Haddadi, has an average height of 199cm, or about 6 feet, 6 inches.

Host Philippines is in the middle of the pack when it comes to height, coming in seventh with an average of 192.83cm, or a shade below 6 feet, 4 inches.

Jordan, which will be missing several of its veteran stars, will have to compensate with ceiling, as it ranked third, coming just a shade below Iran at an average of 198.83cm, or about 6 feet 7 inches.

Qatar continues the trend of tall teams from the Middle East at 196.75cm, a bit below 6 feet, 5 1/2 inches.

Japan, bannered by the frontcourt duo of Kosuke Takeuchi and JR Sakuragi, comes in fifth at 195.75cm, or about 6 feet, 5 inches on average.

Perennial contender South Korea is sixth at an average of 194.83cm, about a shade below 6 feet, 4 3/4 inches.

Kazakhstan (192.67cm/about 6 feet 3 14/16 inches), India (192.33cm/about 6 feet 3 11/16 inches), Chinese Taipei (190.92cm/about 6 feet 3 3/16), Hong Kong (190.18cm/about 6 feet 2 7/8 inches), Malaysia (189cm/about 6 feet 2 3/8 inches), Saudi Arabia (187cm/about 6 feet 1 5/8 inches), and Thailand (186.17cm/ about 6 feet 1 5/16 inches) round out the rankings, with no listings given for the Bahrain squad.
