Buckingham Palace officials say the Prince of Cambridge, the newborn son of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate, is named George Alexander Louis.
BehindTheName.Com ranked ‘George’ as the 12th most popular name for boys in England and Wales. It was derived from the Greek word ‘georgos’, which means “farmer, earthworker”.
Agence France Presse (AFP) report says, “George, a name shared by six previous kings, was the clear favorite during the fevered speculation about the prince’s name, as it pays tribute to Queen Elizabeth II’s beloved father King George VI, who reigned from 1936 until his death in 1952.”
George VI, whose birth name was actually Albert and was known as Bertie, was the subject of the Oscar-winning film “The King’s Speech” which portrayed his struggle to overcome a severe stutter and lead his nation during World War II.
The first British king to bear the name was the German-born George I, the first monarch of the House of Hanover, who ruled from 1714 to 1727.
Other famous royals to hold the name include George III (1760-1820) whose madness has also been depicted on film.
Alexander meanwhile puzzled the pundits, apart from the fact that the queen’s middle name is Alexandra.
BehindTheName.Com says Alexander is the 23rd most popular name in England and Wales but is 6th most popular in Austria. The website says it’s the Latinized form of the Greek name Alexandros, which means “defending men”.
Ranked 68 as most popular names in England and Wales, “Louis is one of William’s middle names and was also the first name of Lord Louis Mountbatten, the Viceroy of India and a mentor to Prince Charles, the baby’s grandfather, and the first heir of the royal throne.”
“Mountbatten was killed in 1979 when the Irish Republican Army blew up his boat off the coast of Ireland,” says AFP.
But prior to its popularity in England, Louis was the name of 18 kings of France. It is most popular in Belgium where it ranked 4th.
But why did the royal couple name their son ‘George Alexander Louis‘? We really do not know. But if we will combine the meanings of the three names, we will only agree (with prayers) that he indeed will grow as a humble man that would defend his fellow men using his ‘kingly authority’.
