A unanimous vote by the 11 member associations of Asean Football Federation (AFF) in Dili, Timor Leste, resulted in Australia becoming a full member of the AFF, Football Federation Australia announced Monday in a release on their website.

Australia now part of ASEAN Football Federation

“Football Federation Australia is honored to be admitted to the ASEAN Football Federation. We look forward to being an active member, and to contributing to the ongoing development and success of football in our region”, said FFA General Secretary and CEO David Gallop.

The President of the AFF, His Royal Highness Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah welcomed AFF’s newest member, saying, “Timor Leste was the last member of AFF. It is only fitting we are all here today for this proud nation to pass the baton to Australia.”

As a result of the vote, Australia will have "full political membership of the regional body," on the heels of the country joining the Asian Football Confederation back in 2006, after leaving the Oceania Football Confederation.

Australia will also be hosting the 2015 AFC Asian Cup, where a berth in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup is at stake. They reached the AFC Asian Cup finals in 2011, where they lost 1-0 to Japan's late volley in extra time.
