The Philippine Azkals climbed to its highest place in the latest FIFA World Rankings released on Thursday.
After remaining at 144th since May, the Azkals rose to 141st for their highest ranking in history, topping its previous record of 143rd last April. They remain second in Southeast Asia behind Thailand (137th) and 22nd in Asia.
The Azkals made the jump despite not playing since June. World football governing body FIFA calculates every country’s ranking based on match results (a win, a loss or a draw), its importance (i.e. a friendly or a World Cup match), and the strength of the opponent ranking-wise.
These points are drawn from the country’s results in the previous four years, allowing some teams to move in the rankings despite not seeing action.
The Azkals will next play Indonesia in a friendly match on August 14 at the Manahan Stadium in Surakarta, Indonesia.
Spain continued its reign on top of the rankings, followed by Germany, Colombia, Argentina and the Netherlands.
In Asia, Japan stayed at number one, followed by Australia, Iran, South Korea and Uzbekistan.
