The camp of Manny Pacquiao has denied that the Filipino superstar is going bankrupt after earning millions of dollars from professional boxing.
In a SPIN report by Snow Badua, Pacquiao’s chief of staff Roger “Haplas” Fernandez said just because his boss has decided to sell his Los Angeles mansion doesn’t mean he’s running out of money.
“Siguro ibinase nila yun sa ibinebentang bahay ni Boss sa LA. Kalokohan ‘yan. Walang basehan yan. Ibinebenta yun kasi wala namang nakatira. Sayang lang. Ang mahal-mahal pa ng tax,” said Fernandez.
He was referring to the five-bedroom property which is being sold for $2.7 million.
“Nagbenta lang ng property bankrupt na?”
Pacquiao’s mother, Mommy Dionisia, echoed Fernandez’s sentiments and said she doesn’t see any indication her son is going bankrupt.
She said her son is very much in control of his finances with investments here and abroad.
Mommy Dionisia added that the boxing superstar has many employees on his payroll and that he continues to give out their salaries.
“Hindi ko naman nakikita na bankrupt siya. Kasi andami pa niyang tauhan na pinapa-sweldo. Kung wala na siyang pera, wala na yung mga yun,” she said.
Mommy Dionisia also said that her son has been very generous to the poor.
“Ganun kabait sa kapwa ang anak ko. Kaya kung naubos man yung pera niya, talagang itinutulong niya. Hindi naman niya sinusugal. Mapagbigay siya talaga,” she said.
The issue stemmed from a story that came out in a Cebu Daily wherein Pacquiao’s close friend Rex “Wakee” Salud was quoted as saying that the Filipino boxer’s money was “already gone.”
"Di lang kay nahurothurot, hurot gyud! (He did not just lose his money, he lost all of it)," Salud was quoted as saying in a Super Balita Cebu story titled "Nahurot" ang money ni Manny.
But in an interview with Snow Badua, Salud denied saying those words.
“Wala akong sinabi na ganun. Pinalaki lang nung writer (I didn’t say anything like that. The writer merely exaggerated it),” the veteran boxing promoter said.
Salud said that what he told the writer is that Pacquiao is no longer as wealthy as before since he has less fights.
“Ang sabi ko lang … baka medyo gipit. Kasi isang taon nang walang laban, nanibago yung lifestyle. Pero hindi ko sinabi na bangkarote na."
(What I said was… maybe he's a bit short. Because he hasn’t fought for a year now, he changed his lifestyle. But I didn’t say he's bankrupt).”
Salud also hinted that he's filing charges against the writer.
