Gilas Pilipinas may look for a new American player to naturalize for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup of basketball in Spain next year as Marcus Douthit’s contract with the national team will expire next month.
But a team official said that matter will be up for discussion maybe later in the year.
“Let us savor this moment first, let us enjoy this for a while,” said Gilas team manager Butch Antonio when asked about the team’s future plans..
Antonio said the status quo remains and tweaking the team at this time is not in the agenda.
“As of now, where we stand right now, that’s where we are. There is no candidate or player (to be naturalized). It will be discussed probably a month after the FIBA Asia. But as of the moment, nothing really as far as (the status) of Marcus,” said Antonio.
The 6-foot-11 Douthit was naturalized in 2010 and has played for the Philippines in two FIBA Asia Championships and was instrumental in helping the Philippines in both tournaments.
With its second place finish, the Philippines joined Iran and South Korea as Asia’s representative to the World Cup.
