Netizens appeal to PAGASA to name next storm 'Napoles'

Tropical Depression ‘Napoles’?

Tropical storm Janet Lim-Napoles

As Tropical Storm Maring exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Wednesday and a new low pressure area is spotted by the state weather bureau on Thursday, is it possible to name the next typhoon-which will carry the initial ‘N’- after businesswoman and alleged P10 billion pork scam mastermind Janet Lim-Napoles?

Netizens are urging the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) to name the next weather disturbance ‘Napoles’, with the hopes of increasing awareness of the issue to the public

“Calling the next typhoon 'Napoles' will increase public awareness - and outrage - on the issue even more. Those who don't know about it will ask; those who are already informed can disseminate accurate info to everyone else,” Quinito Villegas Villarosa posted on his Facebook account, referring to the Priority Development fund of lawmakers which is under increased scrutiny after a special Commission on Audit Report cited numerous anomalies on the disbursement of the funds to NGOs, some of whom are linked to Napoles.

“We should call the next typhoon Napoles. Thats one letter away. You know, just to remind everyone what they owe the Philippines,” Armi Millare (@armimillare), vocalist and keyboardist of Up Dharma Down band, tweeted.

Tweeter user @the4thram said that the proposal should be pushed “to avoid the pork barrel scam from being swept under the rug.”

“We will call the next typhoon as NAPOLES. So we would remember the tragedy she has brought to us. Yes, burning our taxes is a tragedy!” twitter user @jigeoff said.

A fake twitter account of Napoles (@JanetLimNapoles) responded to the uproar:

“'Yung iba, gusto ang pangalan ng next bagyo ay "Napoles." Sige, ginusto niyo yan. Handa naman akong magpaulan--NG PERA! Hihihihi [Other people want to name the next typhoon Napoles. So be it. That’s what you want. I’m ready to make money rain],” she said.

According to Venus Valdemoro, Officer-in-Charge of Pagasa Public Information office, it is possible for citizens to request a name for a weather disturbance. However, any request will have to go through the proper process, she noted.

Before Napoles can become an official name used by PAGASA, one of the four sets of names need to be removed or decomissioned by the weather bureau first.

The weather bureau said that it only removes names from the list when it causes severe damage to the country.

For instance, Ondoy, which devastated the country in 2009, leaving almost more than 280 people dead, was “decommissioned” from the list, she said.

The name for the next weather disturbance that will enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility this year will be named ‘Nando.’

Napoles is the subject of a nationwide manhunt operation after a Makati court issued an arrest warrant for her and brother, Reynald Lim, over the serious illegal detention case filed by pork scam whistleblower Benhur Luy.
