Tim Cone confident James Yap, Marqus Blakely will overcome struggles

“You can’t keep great players down for long.”

This is what San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone believes as he expects superstar swingman James Yap to break out of a shooting slump and import Marqus Blakely to overcome his struggles from the free throw line.

Yap, a two-time Most Valuable Player, has struggled from the field in the first two games of the Governors’ Cup, both San Mig Coffee losses. He averaged just five points a game while shooting a miserable 2-of-25 from the field.

Blakely, meanwhile, has been a superman on the court for the Mixers, averaging 31.5 points and 22.5 rebounds in two games. But the free throw line has been his kryptonite, only making 15-of-35 shots from the stripe over that period.

Cone admits their struggles have affected the Mixers’ campaign in the short elimination round of the Governors’ Cup.

“They are concerns at this point,” said Cone. “We are looking at ways to get them both untracked. Needless to say, we greatly rely on both of them to win games and if they struggle, we’ll struggle as a team.

But our whole team knows they’ll turn things around.”

The Mixers are scheduled to plunge back into action on Wednesday against the GlobalPort Batang Pier
