In the eyes of multi-titled coach Tim Cone, former Barako Bull star and now San Mig Coffee Mixers player Allein Maliksi is his new Kenneth Duremdes.
Maliksi told Solar Sports Desk the gist of his meeting with Cone Friday afternoon, moments after his trade from Barako Bull Energy Cola was approved by Commissioner Chito Salud. (read the PBA trade news here)
“Ang nakita daw niya sa akin ay parang batang Kenneth Duremdes,” said Maliksi. “Si Kenneth nga daw ang one of the favorite players niya na naglaro sa kanya.”
“Andami daw naming similarity sa laro,” he echoed the statement by the one-time grand slam champion coach.
Duremdes was one of the most trusted players by Cone for the Alaska Aces from 1998 to 2002.
And with his transfer to the San Mig Coffee Mixers, Maliksi is hanging on to the promises given by Cone.
“Oo natutuwa talaga ako kasi para purihin ka ng isang Tim Cone… Ang laking bagay nun sa isang player na tulad ko,” Maliksi said.
“Sana talaga magkaruon ako ng chance para patunayan yung pagtitiwala sa akin ni Coach,” said the 25 year old former UST Tiger.
The only worry now bothering Maliksi si how to get the playing minutes at the talent laden rotation of Cone.
“Yun ang challenge sa akin ngayon. Kaya pangako ko na lang--- lalaro lang ako para pag ginamit… maipapakita ko ang worth ko,” he said.
“Pakiramdam ko nga gagamitin na ako agad bukas (Saturday) ni coach kaya kanina naghabol talaga ako makuha yung system niya. Kumplikado pa naman ito kasi triangle,” Maliksi said.
The PBA D-League inaugural MVP was acquired by San Mig in a hastily negotiated trade that saw Wesley Gonzales and Chris Pacana moving to Barako Bull, who also got hold of the Mixers’ second round pick in the 2017 draft.
