On the fictional news broadcast "BV Patrol," mug shots of fugitive businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles were shown after she surrendered—on mugs.
Meanwhile, a photo of Napoles on her yacht with President Benigno Aquino III also surfaced on the Internet— however, her yacht looked suspiciously like the Titanic.
These and other manipulated photos or “memes” of Napoles flooded social media after news broke of her surrender to President Aquino last night.
Memes of Napoles with pig’s ears and a snout also spread, as well as a depiction of her as the Muppet Miss Piggy in a mug shot.
One meme showed Napoles as a contestant who will sing on “The Voice of the Philippines”. The judges were Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim Henares, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales, and Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago.
Another showed Janet Jackson: "Janet, kumanta na!"
Another speculated that maybe, Napoles surrendered because she wanted to claim the bounty on her own head.
Meanwhile, netizens said they expect Napoles will soon get ill and be sent to St. Luke’s Medical Center in order to avoid detention in a prison cell. One meme with action star Bembol Roco in a contemplative pose contained the text: “May nase-sense ako. 1. Mahuhuli si Napoles; 2. Magkakaroon ng Senate inquiry; 3. Magkakasakit siya; 4. Dadalhin sa St. Luke's.”
This was an allusion to what happened to former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and former Chief Justice Renato Corona. Arroyo and Corona were much mocked by Filipinos online for appearing in wheelchairs when they got sick during their trials, in what they saw as a poor attempt to solicit pity from the public.
Another meme showed photos of Arroyo and Corona in wheelchairs, along with a photo of Miss Piggy. “Birds of the same feather end in the same chair,” said the caption.
Many netizens expressed anger at the businesswoman and the misuse of the pork barrel, and used memes to express their fury.
However, others chastised the administration, saying Napoles’ surrender was scripted.
"Hoy ikaw!" went one meme depicting the late Fernando Poe Jr. pointing an accusing finger at an unidentified man. "Kunwari ka pang may P10M reward money, nasa Malacanang lang pala."
Others quickly created memes out of photos that were released this morning by Malacanang.
“Lord?” went Napoles in one meme. The original photo released by the Palace as proof of her surrender showed her looking upwards at an object out of the image’s frame.
