Murray has already pulled out of the Thailand Open 2013 tournament which begins on September 23 and is expected to skip the entire Asian swing of tournaments.

It’s not yet known whether he will participate at the prestigious ATP World Tour Finals in November. Murray was one of the three players who already qualified for the elite eight man event.

“Next week Andy is set to undergo minor back surgery in an effort to clear up a longstanding back problem,” the statement read.

“The issue flared up during the Italian Open this year when Andy was forced to retire and he sought advice from a range of specialists. After recently playing on hard courts and clay, Andy once again sought medical advice about solving the issue once and for all. The aim is to be fully fit for the new season.”

It can be remembered that Murray pulled out of the French Open tournament due to lingering back problems but came back on tour with an impressive run at the Wimbledon tournament, winning the title in the process and ending Britain’s 77-year long wait for a male champion for the grasscourt Slam event.
