Big Game James Yap showed he’s capable of more than just putting points in the bucket.

James Yap shuts down Mark Caguioa in PBA Manila Clasico

As the leader of the San Mig Coffee Mixers, James Yap stepped up on the defensive end with two of his team’s top players missing. He shut down Mark Caguioa, hounding the Barangay Ginebra superstar to 0-of-11 shooting from the field.

“Lahat kami dumi-depensa na. Secondary na lang yung opensa,” said Yap.

The two-time Most Valuable Player did his usual share of offense, finishing with 19 points on three three-pointers. But he did much more than that, defending Caguioa and doing the dirty work off the boards with nine rebounds.

“Ibinigay ko yung best ko sa kanya,” said Yap. “Alam naman natin si Mark yung go-to-guy ng Ginebra. Kaya siya yung focus namin. Kapag tumanggap siya ng bola di-depensahan ko siya. Syempre yung help andun din kaya hindi siya makatira ng maayos.”

The Mixers emerged victorious despite the absence of top big men Marc Pingris and Joe Devance, who were serving out suspensions for their involvement in a brawl against GlobalPort last Wednesday.

In embracing his new role, Yap explained that it’s a must to stay in tip-top condition.

“Wino-work out ko rin yung (previously injured) likod ko at yung legs ko. At least yung extra work out ko, nadadala ko sa game,” added Yap.
