Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez doubts Saul “Canelo” Alvarez can succeed where he has failed and hand American champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. the first loss of his professional boxing career.
Marquez was outclassed by Mayweather when they fought in 2009, losing a wide points decision.
The 22-year-old Alvarez is seeking to defeat the American in their September 14 showdown, but “Dinamita” doubts the young Mexican can pull off an upset.
“I can tell you that upsets are sparse, and based on that I don’t think Canelo can get it,” Marquez said in an interview with Boxing Scene.
Marquez pointed to Mayweather’s remarkable defensive skills, which frustrated him as well as numerous other opponents throughout the years.
“Defensively speaking, Mayweather is the best. He makes it very difficult to land your punches. He is very elusive,” Marquez explained. “You start to get desperate, and he leverages this desperation to connect.”
“Canelo is not going to be an exception,” he added.
Although he does not think Alvarez can win, Marquez is hopeful that the young Mexican can make a good account of himself.
“We hope the Mexican can win,” he said. “He needs a little bit more experience. He has the opportunity to show that he is a great boxer.”
