UE questions the presence of banned Ateneo coach Perasol in venue

The UE Red Warriors are seeking clarification of the rules on suspensions after a possible violation surfaced that could result in Ateneo’s forfeiture of their 77-72 win last Sunday.

Ateneo coach Bo Perasol, who was out serving a one-game suspension for his encounter with a La Salle fan last week, was spotted inside the Mall of Asia Arena during the game, despite a UAAP rule stating that “the presence of a suspended coach, manager, assistant manager, statistician, scorers, masseurs, etc. and those listed as members of the team shall not be allowed in the bench or venue during the period of suspension.”

A violation, the rule stated, “shall result in forfeiture of the game where such suspended team official or member was found present.”

UE has sent a letter to the UAAP Board of Trustees, which is set to meet on Thursday, September 12, to discuss the matter.

The letter stated that UE is requesting “that the UAAP 76 Board conduct an investigation of this matter and that the appropriate sanction be imposed in accordance with the UAAP 76 Rules and Regulations.”

Photos of Perasol being led out of the courtside area by former UAAP commissioner Ato Badolato were published online and reports have surfaced that Perasol was in the Ateneo locker room for the duration of the game.

The board’s ruling could have major implications for the final four race, with Ateneo currently figuring in a tie for fourth place and UE out of the running following the result of their game last Sunday.
