Yeng Guiao on controversial loss to Ginebra: "We were robbed of a win"

“We felt we were robbed of a win.” This was the bold statement of Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao following his team’s controversial 101-100 loss to Barangay Ginebra San Miguel on Saturday night at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

“We’ll file a protest for whatever is worth,” said Guiao. “We will file a protest before 12 noon tomorrow (Sunday).”

The Elasto Painters fumed over the late call of referee Nol Quilingen, who whistled a foul on Beau Belga against Mac Baracael in the closing seconds of the game.

That rewarded Baracael three free throws, leaving only three-tenths of a second left in the game.

But Guiao contested the referee’s call.

“It was an obvious no-foul. We felt that Referee Quilingen does not deserve to officiate in this league,” said Guiao.

“Kasi tinawag niya nung nasa kamay na ni AZ (Reid) yung bola saka siya tumawag ng foul eh. Kumbaga masyadong delayed. When the action happened, he should have called it right away. Kaso hinintay muna kung papasok dahil kung papasok siguro yun, hindi niya tatawagan. Nung hindi pumasok saka siya tumawag,” added Guiao.

Guiao is also questioning the remaining time given to them when the call was made.

“Yung oras ang tingin rin naman mga more than a second pa, pero binigyan kami, 0.3 na lang. That only happened because of the bad decision of the referee. Consequence lang yun nung original na maling tawag, so pwede ring isama,” said Guiao.

“Pero I think not only that call actually. During the game meron pang mga ibang tawag, syempre. Pero this was more emphasized. You have your own opinion siguro, but I’m confident most people would say it should not be called a foul at that point.”
