Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and Barako Bull Energy Cola exchanged point guards, early Thursday morning, in a trade approved by the PBA Commissioner's Office.
“The proposed trade between Ginebra's Rob Labagala and Barako Bull's Eman Monfort has been approved by the PBA,” read the official statement from the league.
Monfort had a phenomenal Governors' Cup campaign for Barako before getting injured in the season-ending conference. He tallied averages of 10.8 points, 2.6 rebounds and 4.6 assists for the Energy Cola.
A starter at the Barako camp, the 16th overall pick in the 2012 PBA Draft will now play second fiddle to Commissioner's Cup Best Player and Season MVP candidate LA Tenorio. Incidentally, the two playmakers are both products of Ateneo de Manila University.
There are unconfirmed reports that the crowd favorites are all set to make former Blue Eagle Greg Slaughter as their top choice in this year's Rookie Draft.
Labagala, on the other hand, will have a chance to prove himself with Barako Bull after posting career-lows in almost all statistical categories in his last playing year with Ginebra.
The third-string point guard, who was a member of the 2010-2011 All-Rookie Team, averaged a measly 2.6 points, 0.6 assists and 0.3 rebounds in only 8.5 minutes, playing behind Tenorio and JJ Helterbrand.
The PBA Philippine Cup kicks off on November 17, just two weeks after the Rookie Draft slated on November 3.
