RAIN or Shine veteran enter Beau Belga’s status with the E-Painters remain uncertain after he turned down the team’s three-year counter offer during their meeting on Monday morning.
Accompanied by his agent Dany Espiritu, the 6-6 wide-bodied slotman stood firm on his demand for a three-year contract extension with the league maximum of P420,000 a month, amounting to P15.12 million.
Speaking on behalf of his ward, Espiritu said Belga was simply considering the future of his family, given that his market value has risen in recent years after playing a major role in Rain or Shine’s first-ever league championship in the Governors' Cup last season.
The former Philippine Christian University slotman and Gilas reserve's mandatory two-month extension is set to expire on October 31.
Belga averaged just 6.8 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists this season, though what adds value to Belga is his intimidating inside presence and the ability to guard imports.
Espiritu said should the E-Painters decide not to give Belga his asking price, they may just have to find takers for Belga, which in all likelihood could pave the way for talks with Barangay Ginebra.
Guiao has already made it clear that they are keen on picking any of the three available rookie big men in the draft pool set this November 3.
Former Ateneo big man Greg Slaughter, the 6-7 Sangalang, and Letran star Raymond Almazan are the consensus top three picks for the draft this year.
And should Slaughter and Sangalang end up as the first two picks, Guiao is set to select the lanky 6-7 Almazan as the No. 3 pick overall.
