The Gilas Pilipinas national squad brought joy to the country when it won the silver medal in the FIBA Asia Championship last August.
The Philippine national youth basketball team has a chance to do one better on Saturday when it takes on China for the gold medal in the FIBA Asia Under-16 Championship.
No less than Gilas coach Chot Reyes is rooting for the Filipino teens to top what their senior counterparts accomplished.
@coachot: Our U16 Team went thru so much difficulty - funding, players, schedule - but now are 1 W away from d GOLD. I hope they outdo their kuyas :)
The Philippine team, coached by Talk ‘N Text assistant Jamike Jarin, will play for the title after defeating Chinese Taipei, 77-72, in the semifinals.
That win also gave the Philippines a ticket to the FIBA Under-17 World Championship next year in Dubai.
Reyes also shared a text message from Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manuel V. Pangilinan, whose MVP Foundation helped funded the youth team’s campaign.
Text ni@iamMVP kay Coach Jamike: "You guys have done a magnificent job. You've made the country much happier after Fiba Asia. Puso!"
