Philippine Azkals now the No.1 team in Southeast Asia

After their successful title defense at the Peace Cup last Tuesday, the good news continue pour in for the Philippine Azkals after they emerged as the top team in Southeast Asia in the latest FIFA rankings released on Thursday.

The Azkals climbed four notches to No. 137 from No. 141 to claim their best FIFA ranking so far. In the process, it also passed Southeast Asian powerhouse Thailand, which dropped four spots to No. 143.

“Up to 137 in the rankings! #1 in the ASEAN region!! #Azkals #WeBelieve,” former Azkals skipper Aly Borromeo celebrated on Twitter.

“Another milestone as AZKALS achieves highest FIFA ranking so far, and currently #1 national team in SouthEast Asia! Thank you daddy God,” team manager Dan Palami tweeted.

The jump in rankings comes after the Azkals were able to defend the Philippine Football Peace Cup with a thrilling 3-1 victory over Pakistan in Bacolod City last week.

Before this month, the Philippines held its highest FIFA ranking to date at No. 141.

Myanmar zoomed from No. 162 to No. 149 in the latest rankings, followed by Vietnam (No. 151), Singapore (No. 155), Malaysia (No. 160) and Indonesia (No. 162).

Spain remained on top of the FIFA rankings followed by Germany, Argentina, Colombia and Belgium.

Next up in the Azkals calendar are games against United Arab Emirates (No. 71) on November 9 and against India (No. 154) on November 15.
