The Philippine national youth basketball team fell short in its gold medal quest, dropping an 85-78 result to China in the finals of the FIBA Asia Under-16 Championship on Friday in Tehran, Iran.
The Filipinos settled for the silver medal after battling gallantly against the much-taller Chinese, who were up by only four points, 59-55, heading into the final period.
But a 15-7 run allowed China, which won its third straight gold medal in the tournament, to open up a 74-62 lead.
The Pinoy teens tried to rally back just as it did against Chinese Taipei a day before. But they could come no closer that eight points the rest of the way until a last-second three-pointer cut the final margin to seven.
Ateneo high school gunner Jolo Mendoza, the hero of the win over Chinese Taipei, again led the Philippines with 20 points but struggled making just 2-of-8 shots from beyond the arc. As a team, the Philippines made less than 40 percent of their shots, dooming their chances against China.
Despite the defeat, the Philippines still punched a ticket to the FIBA Under-17 World Championship in Dubai next year. The youth team duplicated the performance of their senior counterparts, the Gilas Pilipinas national team, which also won silver in the FIBA Asia Championship last August to qualify for the Basketball World Cup.
