Like any other rookie, Justin Melton had butterflies in his stomach in his first practice game with his new PBA team.
What made it worse was that he was joining the San Mig Coffee Mixers, a team stacked with star power from its lineup led by superstar James Yap to its coaching staff, which includes legends such as Johnny Abarrientos.
“I’m kinda starstruck actually under the same roof as so many legends like Johnny A., James Yap,” said Melton, who was selected by the Mixers as the 13th overall pick in the second round of the draft.
But the butterflies went away as soon as Melton took the court, wowing his veteran teammates with hustle and athletic play. He had several dunks that drew ooh’s and aah’s from the rest of the Mixers.
“It feels good,” Melton said. “I enjoyed it and loved every minute of it.”
San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone saw Melton’s potential during a workout before the draft, but was even more impressed by the rookie’s first appearance with the team.
“His athleticism wows you, so you’ve got to give him a chance,” said Cone. “And now that we’re seeing him up close, he’s a lot better than we even thought. We’re pleased to get him at No. 13.”
