Petron Blaze team consultant Todd Purves said he looks at improving June Mar Fajardo’s potential to have the same defensive acumen of Memphis Grizzlies center Marc Gasol.
“(Fajardo's) a coachable kid so we work on him everyday,” Purves said in Richard Dy’s Spin.ph report. “He’s working real hard, he’s a wonderful kid and he’s easy to work with. I expect him to continue to get better.”
After a so-so performance in the early part of the 2012-2013 PBA season, the 7-foot-tall Cebuano has become a force inside the paint.
He became instrumental to Petron Blaze’s second-place finish in the recent Governors’ Cup.
Purves said Fajardo will only have to polish his “timing on the weak side defense and his rotations” to create more problems to opposing teams.
“I want to say, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year in the NBA, Marc Gasol, is not particularly athletic, but he knows where he’s supposed to be and clogs that up,” he said.
