Chot Reyes: 'Calvin Abueva's antics won't get him to Gilas PH'

Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes said Calvin Abueva will have to change his attitude if he has hopes of joining the national team for the FIBA World Basketball Cup.

In an interview with SPIN, Reyes said he wasn’t pleased to see Abueva’s “nganga” gesture during Alaska’s quarterfinals with Barangay Ginebra.

"Isipin mo naman, dala mo ang bandila ng Pilipinas tapos makikita ka dun nagkakain-subo ka habang naglalaro ka," said Reyes.

He added that Abueva’s tendency to “flop” is also a no-no in international tournaments.

"'Yung flopping, automatic technical sa international game 'yon. Ganoon din 'yung mga second motion. I feel the unnecessary part of his game will only get in the way [of the team]. That's just my thinking," Reyes said.

In the past, Reyes tried to get Abueva to join Gilas when the team was preparing for the FIBA Asia Championship. The coach, however, failed to get an approval from the Alaska team management.

This time, he’s having second thoughts on tapping Abueva’s services.

"He's a good player, a great player, really," Reyes said. "Sayang s'ya. He can be an asset to the national team."

"If he shows he's changed, then maybe [we can consider him in the future]. But not in this Gilas team."
