National team coach Chot Reyes is hoping that the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) and the PBA teams will grant members of Gilas Pilipinas more practice time in preparation for the FIBA World Cup and the Asian Games.
The FIBA world Cup is set to take place from August 30 to September 14, while the Asian Games will take center stage from September 19 to October 4.
Reyes noted that the South Koreans have already scheduled its training ahead of the two events.
“Tayo Aug[ust] pa,” lamented the coach through his Twitter account.
According to Reyes, South Korea calendared its training camp in April and May, overseas training in May and June and exhibition matches in June and August.
In contrast, Gilas will only have one month of practice since “that's the only window the PBA Board is giving us,” he said.
Gilas pulled off a sensational run in the FIBA Asia Championship, getting past Kazakhstan and Korea before bowing to powerhouse Iran in the finals.
The second-place finish guaranteed the Filipinos a place in the 2014 FIBA World Cup.
Reyes said preparations will be crucial for Gilas, which will be up against the world’s best in the FIBA competition.
“With good preparation, 50-50. Without it, slim-and-none,” he said of the nationals’ chances in the FIBA World Cup and Asiad.
