Ginebra taps veteran wingman Leon Rodgers for PBA Commissioner’s Cup

With last year’s import Vernon Macklin unavailable to suit up because of the 6-foot-9 height limit for the Commissioner’s Cup, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel has tapped a veteran to lead the team for the tournament.

The Gin Kings have signed 33-year-old Leon Rodgers, according to the import’s agent Sheryl Reyes.
Rodgers is scheduled to come to the Philippines on February 24 as the swingman is currently playing in China until February 16.

Listed at 6-foot-7, the well-traveled Rodgers has played all over the world, even winning Most Valuable Player honors in the Netherlands three times. He is currently on a very productive stint with the Jilin Northeast Tigers in China, where he is averaging 35 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists.

A natural small forward with three-point range, Rodgers is expected to shore up Ginebra’s wing position, with the team’s frontcourt already featuring twin towers Greg Slaughter and Japeth Aguilar.

Ginebra is hoping to duplicate its success in the Commissioner’s Cup last season with Macklin, who led the Gin Kings to a finals appearance.
