Tim Cone compares resting Yap, Pingris, Simon to Duncan, Manu, Parker tactics

In the NBA, the San Antonio Spurs have the veteran Big Three of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili.

The PBA’s San Mig Super Coffee Mixers also have their own veteran Big Three with James Yap, Marc Pingris, and Peter June Simon.

San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone made the connection himself when trying to explain why he makes sure to give his veteran stars ample rest amid their heated PLDT Home TVolution Commissioner’s Cup series against Talk ‘N Text.

“I’m trying to keep those three guys — Yap, Marc Pingris and PJ Simon — like, if I may, like Duncan, Ginobili and Parker,” said Cone.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich has been known to manage the minutes of his stars to make sure that they’re fresh, a tactic that Cone borrows.

It became apparent in Game Two when Cone played his three stars limited minutes. Pingris played just 26 minutes, Simon saw action for 25, while Yap got just 18.

“I’m not doing it for the team. I’m doing it for them. I realize they’ve given us so much and they’re exhausted. They need breaks sometimes,” said Cone.

The limited court time was a non-issue for the trio.

“Ping, PJ, and James didn’t say a word about last game. They just came to practice. Nothing mentioned. They knew they’re gonna start the next game. They knew they’re gonna play major minutes next game,” said Cone.

“I feel that after winning three championships with this team, we have a lot of trust. They trust me to make the right decisions for them.”

The gambit seemed to work on Tuesday as Yap and Simon hit big shots down the stretch to carry the Mixers to a thrilling 77-75 win, while Pingris’ defense on Talk ‘N Text star Jayson Castro and import Richard Howell was also a big key. The three of them along with fellow starters James Mays and Joe Devance combined to score 67 of 77 points for the Mixers.

“When it comes down to it big game like this, we’re gonna rely on those guys. They know that,” said Cone.
