Abueva, last season’s Rookie of the Year, is one of the league’s brightest young stars and a key player for the Aces, who are currently competing in the ongoing PLDT Home Telpad Governors’ Cup semifinals.
The second-year player will be available by July 9, though, as the PBA season is expected to end by that time.
Four other pros are set to join Abueva in the tournament.
“We have four names representing the team composed of PBA players, but we could only name Calvin Abueva at this time,” Barrios said.
Dickie Bachmann, Alaska’s representative to the PBA board, confirmed to InterAksyon.com that they have given Abueva permission to play for the national squad competing in this international FIBA sanctioned-event, which will be held for the first time at an indoor venue.
“The SBP wrote to us and (Alaska team owner Fred Uytengsu) approved it,” said Bachmann.
“As long as there’s no conflict with our PBA schedule and it’s an offseason, we see no problem allowing Calvin.”
