Batang Gilas suffers 42-point defeat vs China in FIBA Asia U-18 tilt

The Philippine national youth team, Batang Gilas, got a rude awakening against powerhouse China, 91-49, in the second round of the FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship on Saturday in Doha, Qatar.

A day after a thrilling victory over the host nation, Batang Gilas suffered a beatdown at the hands of the perennial Asian champion.

The Philippines was still in striking distance after the opening quarter, trailing by just seven points, 22-15.

But it was all China from that point on, as the East Asians limited the Filipinos to miserable 26 percent shooting from the field. China also pounded the Philippines in rebounding, 57-29.

No Batang Gilas player scored in double-figures, underscoring China's dominance. Little-used Brandrey Bienes led the team with nine points.

The defeat dropped the Philippines' tournament record to 2-2. Batang Gilas wraps up its second round campaign on Sunday against Malaysia before moving into the knockout rounds of the tournament.
