Gilas Pilipinas falls short vs Iran 68-63 (VIDEO) - Asian Games 2014

Iran continued its mastery of Gilas Pilipinas, 68-63, but not before surviving a tough fight in the preliminary round of the Asian Games basketball tournament on Thursday.

Iran imposed its might to start the game, taking a 29-17 lead after the first period behind behemoth center Hamed Haddadi.

But the Gilas defense clicked in the second quarter, suffocating the Iranian attack to the tune of just seven points. That allowed the Philippines to come to within a single basket, 36-34, at halftime.

Paul Lee opened the second half with guns blazing, scoring five straight points to give Gilas its first taste of the lead, 39-36.

Iran briefly took back the advantage at 43-41, before back-to-back three-pointers from LA Tenorio sparked a 10-1 run that gave the Philippines its biggest advantage, 51-44, with 2:58 left in the third period.

Gilas continued to nurse the lead in the fourth quarter, taking a 60-53 lead with 6:35 left. But with naturalized starting center Marcus Douthit on the bench, Iran rattled off an 8-0 to take the upper hand, 61-60.

A split from Lee and two more free throws from Gabe Norwood temporarily gave Gilas the lead, 63-61, with 2:02 remaining.

But Iran had a stronger finishing kick, holding Gilas scoreless the rest of the way.

Samad Nikkhah Bahrami scored 21 points, including the key free throws down the stretch. Haddadi added 20 points and 15 rebounds.
