Gilas Pilipinas has best ‘net rating’ among teams eliminated from FIBA World Cup

The Philippine national men’s basketball team may already be out of contention in the FIBA Basketball World Cup, but that hasn’t stopped Gilas Pilipinas from continuing to impress.

John Schuhmann, NBA.com’s advanced statistics writer, reveals that Gilas Pilipinas has the best net rating of all the teams which have been eliminated from the World Cup.
“Not a surprise given their narrow defeats, Philippines had best NetRtg of teams eliminated,” Schuhmann posted on his Twitter account.

Gilas Pilipinas registered 75.1 possessions per 40 minutes to rank seventh in pace, scored 95.8 points per 100 possessions to be 17th in offensive rating and allowed 103.8 points per 100 possessions to place 13th in defensive rating, according to Schuhmann.

Those numbers yielded a negative 8.1 in net rating, which is the best among the eight eliminated teams and 15th overall.

Advanced statistics uses a complicated set of formulas and calculations to provide a deeper analysis on how good a team or a player is. It is now widely used by NBA teams, and gives an alternative to the traditional box scores.
