Gilas Pilipinas loses 'must-win' game to South Korea 97-95 (VIDEO) - Asian Games 2014

Gilas Pilipinas lost their do-or-die game against the accurate-shooting South Koreans in the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea on Saturday.

It was another heart-breaking defeat as the Filipinos lost only by 2 points, 97-95, a day after getting beaten by Qatar in their first quarterfinal joust.
The Philippines appeared headed to a victory with a 16-point lead in the third quarter as they made 16 out of their 30 attempts from the 3-point area.

But their 68-52 lead vanished after they failed to control TJ Moon, who finished with 38 points for South Korea.

Gilas Pilipinas also played minus their naturalized player Marcus Douthit who was benched by coach Chot Reyes for "disciplinary reasons".

Team skipper Jimmy Alapag had 25 points but this wasn’t enough to save Gilas, which fell to its third straight defeat in the tournament.

LA Tenorio tallied 20 points, while Jeff Chan and June Mar Fajardo added 16 and 12. Fajardo also had 10 rebounds.

The loss virtually vanquished Gilas' chances of making it to the semifinals of the Asiad competition.

Reyes apologized to the Filipino fans after the defeat, but asked for prayers for Gilas' possible entry to the next round.

Gilas is hoping that Kazakhstan will beat Qatar by a small margin in the following game. If the Philippines defeats Kazakhstan by a very wide margin, they may still enter the semifinals.

It was Gilas Pilipinas' third straight loss in the competition after opening their bid with a shaky win against India.

Gilas will face the Kazakhs on Sunday at the Hwaseong Sports Complex.

UPDATE:
Gilas' semis hope still alive after Kazakhstan's win.

Kazakhstan defeated Qatar and kept the Philippines’ hopes of reaching the Asian Games basketball semifinals alive.

The Kazakhs' 65-57 win over the Qataris and the 8-point difference affected the teams’ quotient points, thus giving Gilas Pilipinas a chance to enter the semifinal round.

The Philippines will have to beat Kazakhstan by 11 points on Sunday and hope South Korea defeats Qatar to advance to the semis.

Gilas lost a must-win game against South Korea on Saturday, 97-95, virtually snuffing out the Philippines’ chance of making it to the semifinals.

Gilas played minus their big man Marcus Douthit, who was benched for “disciplinary reasons.”

“The entire responsibility falls on my shoulders. I want to apologize to our people,” said Reyes after the loss.
