Gilas Pilipinas rises three places in FIBA rankings after World Cup stint

The Philippines national team's stint in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup gave the country a bump in the latest world rankings released by the international basketball body.

From No. 34, the Philippines rose three spots to No. 31 after Gilas Pilipinas finished 21st out of 24 teams in the world championship. Gilas won just one game in the World Cup against Senegal, but became darlings of the tournament after tough defeats against fancied opposition Croatia, Greece, Argentina, and Puerto Rico.
FIBA rankings are calculated over the last two Olympic cycles, using a country's ranking in the Olympic basketball tournament, the World Cup, and zonal championship tournaments such as the FIBA Asia Championship.

This means that the Philippines' ranking includes its performances in the FIBA Asia Championship, when the country finished ninth in 2007, eighth in 2009, fourth in 2011, and second last year, as well as the World Cup.

The Philippines is the fifth-ranked team in Asia, trailing China (14th), Iran (17th), South Korea (27th), and Jordan (28th). — JST, GMA News
