The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has told FIBA that it plans to join the bid to host the 2019 FIBA World Cup of Basketball.
Businessman and SBP president Manny Pangilinan said he met with FIBA secretary general Patrick Baumann during the FIBA World Congress in Seville last Friday.
Pangilinan believes they can duplicate the success that they had when the Philippines hosted the FIBA Asia Championship last year.
"I said in 2019 we want to host the FIBA World Cup in the Philippines," said the SBP official, who is currently in Seville, Spain to cheer Gilas Pilipinas in the FIBA World Cup.
He said the Philippines have world-class facilities, which he considered better than Palacio Municipal de Deportes San Pablo where the Group B games of the FIBA Worlds are currently being held.
"We have three international venues [in the Philippines] -- the Mall of Asia Arena, the Araneta Coliseum, the Philippine Arena," he said.
Pangilinan also mentioned a venue being built in Cebu.
He said that this early, two countries have already expressed their desire to host the 2019 edition of the Cup.
"Meron na yata, two or three... and China is included," said Pangilinan.
