Far Eastern University Tamaraws took the headstart in their virtual best-of-three duel against De La Salle Green Archers at the Mall of Asia Arena Sunday evening.
With the 65-60 victory, FEU clinched the second spot in the UAAP Season 77 Final Four to gain the twice-to-beat bonus in the playoffs opposite La Salle.
"I don't think there is any advantage. We only have the twice-to-beat advantage. I have to remind the players that DLSU is still better on paper," said FEU coach Nash racela.
Mike Tolomia led FEU's charge with gane-high 19 points on top of eight boards, and two steals. Mac Belo also came through with a double-double effort of 15 markers and 12 rebounds.
"It was really hard (to win the game). We just showed our character today," Racela said.
Jason Perkins also had a double-double game of 15 points and 13 boards for La Salle, which trailed almost the entire way, but couldn't help his team get over the hump.
La Salle got little contribution from Jeron Teng, who only chippen in eight points on a horrendous 2-of-11 shooting.
After a relatively tight opening quarter, FEU raced off to a 13-2 start in the second period on a triple by Mac Belo, 27-14.
Despite the Archers' resurgence late in the quarter, the Tams went on to wrap up the first half with a 32-24 lead.
Perhaps pumped up after the 10-minute halftime break, La Salle came out strong and began firing at will. Almond Vosotros sank a booming triple to knot the scores at 50-all.
The Tams still ended the quarter with a 53-50 edge, thanks to Mike Tolomia's cold-blooded, buzzer-beating three-pointer that capped off an action-packed penultimate quarter.
La Salle dropped 26 during that quarter, two points better than its first-half output. — Sports Desk Online
