WBO light flyweight champion Donnie ‘Ahas’ Nietes and Filipino boxing star Nonito Donaire sent their countrymen home happy after scoring big victories in their respective matches on Saturday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Nietes, the longest reigning Filipino boxing world champion, made a sixth successful defense of the title he won back in 2011 after a 10th round technical knockout victory over Mexican Gilberto Parra.
The champion (35-1-4, 21 KOs) knocked Parra down in the eighth round and the challenger was unable to answer the bell after the ninth round.
Donaire, a former world champion himself, needed even less time as he clinched a stoppage victory over Brazilian William Prado at the 2:16 mark of the second round. He outclassed his foe completely, ending the fight with a series of punches that left the referee with no choice but to wave the fight off.
It marked a successful return for Donaire, who fought for the first time since losing to Nicholas Walters in October last year.
