Filipino fighter Nonito Donaire dropped a unanimous decision to undefeated Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux Saturday night (Sunday morning in Manila) in New York City.
The smaller Rigondeaux, who spent most of the middle rounds dancing around Donaire, won in 114-113, 115-112, and 116-111.
Donaire lost to the two-time Olympic champion despite scoring a knockdown in the 10th round, the most action-packed chapter of the fight that drew boos from the crowd in attendance.
“It was close. I don’t think he won the fight,” said Donaire, who nonetheless gave Rigondeaux credit.
“He did well. That was my mistake for not changing up.”
The loss continued a streak of tough losses for top Filipino fighters. Manny Pacquiao suffered back-to-back defeats to Timothy Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez, while Brian Viloria lost his title to Juan Francisco Estrada last week.
Donaire lost his WBA world junior featherweight title and saw his 12-year, 30-fight winning streak snapped.

Several boxing analysts are expecting a “tough fight” for Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire against two-time Olympic gold medalist Guillermo “El Chacal” Rigondeux of Cuba for the WBO and WBA junior featherweight championship on April 13 (US time) April 14 (Manila time).
“Rigondeaux has a tremendous amateur pedigree. He's been a good pro, he is unbeaten, but Nonito is in a class of his own right now… he is a rare combination of speed and power. I see him actually winning this fight -- and winning in a spectacular fashion on the 13th,” said James Smith of “In this Corner.”
Although Rigondeaux seems to be the underdog, boxing experts said Donaire still needs to keep his guard.
The Donaire-Rigondeaux fight will take place at the Radio City Music Hall in New York.
