Philippine Azkals loss to Thailand 2-1 in AFF Suzuki Cup 2012 opener

Host Thailand gave the Philippine national men’s football team a rude welcome to open the ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup, outclassing the Azkals, 2-1, in their match Saturday at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

The War Elephants drew first blood, literally, in the match after Azkals ace striker Phil Younghusband suffered a cut over his left eye in the early minutes. The Philippines’ top scorer was hardly a factor in the first half before being subbed out at the break.

AFF Suzuki Cup 2012 (Philippine Azkals) Live Streaming

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Philippine national men’s football team kicks off its campaign in the 2012 ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup when it battles host Thailand Saturday night at the Rajamangala Stadium here.

The Philippine Azkals, whose fame surged after their Cinderella run to the semifinals of the tournament two years ago, look to end their losing tradition to the Thais, to whom they suffered large beatdowns in their last 12 encounters. Thailand’s 9-0 demolition of the Philippines in 1999 remains the most lopsided result of the matchup.

PFF, PSC preparing for potential Suzuki Cup Football Home Match

The Philippine Football Federation, together with the Philippine Sports Commission, is exerting all efforts to make the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium a viable home venue for the national football team should it advance to the semifinals of the 2012 ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup.

When the Azkals reached the semifinals of the Suzuki Cup two years ago, the Filipinos were forced to play their home match in Indonesia due to a lack of venue that meets the organizers’ standard. Indonesia won the series on aggregate, 2-0, to end the team’s surprising run in the tournament.

Azkals Loss To Laos Is Null And Void, says FIFA

The Azkals - Philippine national men’s football team’s heated match against Laos Monday night turned out to be not an official international friendly match after all, which means that the Azkals’ 2-1 loss would have no effect on their world rankings.

In an email to InterAKTV, FIFA confirmed that it withdrew consideration for the game after learning that referees who officiated the game were not recognized by the world governing body.

“Indeed, not all four referees were from FIFA which is a must for an official A-match,” FIFA wrote in an email Tuesday night.
